Hij blijkt een community affairs agent te zijn, die in nauw contact staan met de lokale bevolking en winkel-eigenaars van een bepaalde wijk. Zijn wijk is echter het modieuze SoHo, dus om daar serieus genomen te worden moet ie iets meer z'n best doen

Over hoe een groep Franse underground urban explorers, onder leiding van een klokkenmaker die bij Breguet werkte, de eeuwenoude kapotte klok van het Pantheon te Parijs in het geheim restaureerden terwijl niemand wist dat zij zich toegang tot het gebouw hadden verschaft. En over hoe de Franse overheid, die zich terecht beschaamd voelde, de groep aanklaagde en de klok weer liet saboteren tot pre-restauratie toestand.

"Through meticulous infiltration, UX members have carried out shocking acts of cultural preservation and repair, with an ethos of 'restoring those invisible parts of our patrimony that the government has abandoned or doesn’t have the means to maintain.' The group claims to have conducted 15 such covert restorations, often in centuries-old spaces, all over Paris.

Aardig WSJ artikel over de aparte drang van Japanners om aspecten van cultuur uit het Westen te importeren, tot de kleinste details te verkennen, om vervolgens de hele boel te perfectioneren ver voorbij iets waar wij met ons simpele boerenverstand nog bij kunnen.

Such obsessive—some might say insane—pursuit of perfection, in coffee and cuisine, clothes and comforts, isn't unusual in Japan: In a tiny tapas place in Kyoto, while drinking perfectly poured cañas—small draft beers—and eating deep-fried croquetas de jamón, I reach for a napkin, which turns out to be just a thin sheet of waxy paper that doesn't so much absorb oil as push it toward another, cleaner, part of my hand.
"I think these are Spanish napkins," Gonzalo, my Bilbao-born companion, says in disbelief. It's almost too ridiculous to think that anyone would import such a shoddy implement from halfway around the world. But the owner of this restaurant tracked down these servietas, priced them out, shipped them in, and stacked them up in custom metal dispensers, all because, in one frustrating wipe, they re-create the experience of consuming tapas in a packed barroom in Spain. Whether or not the diners appreciate this is beside the point.

Een artikel uit de Financial Times over de vory, de oude mafia uit de soviet periode, en hoe zij na de komst van het kapitalisme in het moederland haast één zijn geworden met de Russische staat.

It turns out, for example, that mob killings involve an entire symbolic hierarchy. Alongside the straightforward objective of killing or maiming, assassinations are also freighted with meaning.
“In assassinations, there are gradations of respect,” said Gladki. “The lowest is strangling. If you strangle someone, it is a sign of severe disrespect.” Using a pistol, he said, is “50/50” – kind of an OK, but not brilliant way to be killed.
“And then there is the Kalashnikov. To be shot by a Kalashnikov assault rifle is the ultimate form of respect. It is a very good death for a Russian.”

Een ouder artikel uit januari '99, maar juist fraai door de tijdcapsule factor die het met zich meebrengt. William Gibson, een schrijver die erom bekend stond het internet al te hebben voorspeld in de 80s - maar zelf heel ouderwets weigerde er iets mee te doen tot de late 90s - beschrijft de menselijke neiging tot verzamelen en te zoeken naar koopjes via zijn eigen ervaring met het toen nog prille eBay en zijn zoektocht naar vintage horloges.

Mechanical watches are so brilliantly unnecessary. Any Swatch or Casio keeps better time, and high-end contemporary Swiss watches are priced like small cars. But mechanical watches partake of what my friend John Clute calls the Tamagotchi Gesture. They're pointless in a peculiarly needful way; they're comforting precisely because they require tending. And vintage mechanical watches are among the very finest fossils of the pre-digital age. Each one is a miniature world unto itself, a tiny functioning mechanism, a congeries of minute and mysterious moving parts. Moving parts! And consequently these watches are, in a sense, alive. They have heartbeats. They seem to respond, Tamagotchi-like, to "love," in the form, usually, of the expensive ministrations of specialist technicians. Like ancient steam-tractors or Vincent motorcycles, they can be painstakingly restored from virtually any stage of ruin.
And, as with the rest of the contents of the world's attic, most of the really good ones are already in someone's collection.
