Perfect color, slim arms, great fabric–it’s got it all. Unfortunately, we’ll never know what suit this is, but at least this guy is enjoying it as much as we would.
So let’s break it down. First, and already alluded to, is the expert tailoring job. Slim arms make the man look lean, and that inch of exposed shirt cuff adds length to his body. So right off the bat, we’ve got the number one rule of aesthetics down: wear stuff to look long and lean.
Next are the details. Surgeon’s cuffs unbuttoned and flipped back show some panache. Unique to the suit jacket, the soft shoulders add some easy-going flavor that keep this guy from looking like he’s on lunch break from trading dividends at JP Morgan. So obviously, no tie — this is clearly a leisure look. The white pocket square lined with navy piping is a fun choice, and while pretty easy/obvious to execute, it just shows that he’s having a good time.
And of course, there’s that big risk he’s taking: the fedora. What is it that lets him pull off this always enigmatic piece? The right curve of the brim (effortless), the right size (fitted, with a modest brim), and what it always comes down to: attitude. Clothes make a big difference, but only so long as the laid back attitude is there to justify them.
