Dat lijkt me ook exact de bedoeling...

Initialen behoren enkel voor jezelf te zijn en op zo'n manier te worden geplaatst dat het voor anderen niet of nauwelijks zichtbaar is.

Het tweede punt ben ik wel mee eens. Ik word liever levenloos aangetroffen in een maathemd. Moet er niet aan denken dat ze me vinden in één of ander goedkoop hemd.

Nu we toch aan het verplassen zijn. Ik kan slechts gevonden worden in een maathemd, als ik dan een hemd aan heb that is.

Ik vind het niet altijd nodig dat de omgeving ziet dat ik een maathemd draag. De meeste kenners zien het toch wel, ook zonder monogram op een opvallende plek.

De aanhalingstekens had ik wel gezien, maar ik vond het toch leuk hier "serieus" op te reageren. Met name met betrekking tot punt 2.

MONOGRAMS
This is just a photocopy, unfortunately, of an old book which belonged to my father. According to what I’ve heard, embroidered monograms on shirts go back to the beginning of the last century, or even farther. At that time, men wore nothing but white shirts with detachable collars and cuffs (see below) and had their shirts laundered (the French term, blanchir, literally means “to whiten”, and is still used to refer to the act of laundering linens today).

This made for a lot of white shirt bodies with identical collar bands (to which the detachable collar was fastened) and cuff bands (to which detachable cuffs were attached) at the launderers’. It was hard to tell them apart!

Monogramming came about in order to make sure your washerwoman knew whose shirt was whose. At that time, monograms were either black or navy blue. They were never visible when the shirt was worn because men wore waistcoats and it was extremely bad taste to walk around bare-shirted.

Well-off commoners had their initials embroidered on while aristocrats – according to their degree of nobility – had a crown embroidered with their initials underneath. A prince’s crown was different from a count’s or duke’s crown. If my memory serves me correctly, the number of little balls on top of the crown determined one’s degree of nobility (see the image above with the two crowns in the middle of the last row – the one on the left is a king’s, I believe, while the one on the right is a churchman’s – a bishop or a cardinal, though, probably not a country priest).

Today, shirts come in all colors, and so do their monograms. A discreet monogram is what we call “tone on tone collé” – the monogram is embroidered in the main color of the shirt. A darker tone on tone monogram is a bit more noticeable – picture a navy blue monogram on a sky blue shirt, for example.

A few years ago, monograms were still the sign of a bespoke shirt. Today, anyone can have a monogram put on a shirt. Why not? You can even have them stitched on by machine – want to know how to tell the difference from hand monogramming? A machine-stitched monogram is thicker and thus stiffer. A hand-embroidered monogram is much finer and more flexible, but the big difference is that a machine-stitched monogram is as clean on the back as it is on the front, but a hand monogram is not! If you own a hand-monogrammed shirt, look at the inside of the shirt. You may be surprised.

On detachable collars and cuffs:
At the time these were common, they were starched either to a glazed (shiny) finish or a simple (dull) finish, and were stiff as a board and as uncomfortable as possible. In addition, they shrank with each laundering and became quite sharp with use. You can imagine the torture of wearing a detachable collar all day. In order to give them their rounded shape they were rolled between two steel cylinders while still soaked in starch.

Ik heb een hekel aan de Oost. Mijn vriendin heeft daar een jaar of twee geleden bestuurspakken laten maken. Toen de pakken klaar waren pasten die van haar en een vriendin voor geen meter, het excuus was dat de dames waren aangekomen !? Daarnaast was de broek volledig ongevoerd, hetgeen in combinatie met de kwaliteit stof die gebruikt was niet erg comfortabel was. De heren pakken waren niet veel beter, de mannen zagen er uit als beveilgers (lekker vierkant). Daarnaast zaten er in 1 pak nog loempia papiertjes.... dat vond ik wel erg grappig
