The tabarro (cloak) is one of the most extraordinary garments. It is cosy, warm and elegant, and great for cycling. Also, in annoyingly desensitised, flat and conformed world, where one can wear anything, anywhere at any time, the tabarro has a specific natural habitat. Not everyone can wear it, and requires some character and nonchalance. Also, it cannot be worn anywhere and detests the miseries of the contemporary world: air conditioning, crowded buses, the car, restaurants without hangers. The tabarro requires a very specific environment, and a very specific kind of foggy, slightly damp winter, which you find in the small cities of the pianura Padana, and Veneto and then down to Parma and sometimes Mantua.
The tabarro is the sweetest antidote to modernity.
