In 1948 Dino Pizzuti founded Zeis Excelsa, artisanal shoemarking company, and after a few years, he got the support of his brothers Giuseppe and Marcello.

From 1960 to 1970 its growth begins thanks to the North American market and with 400.000 pairs of shoes per year and 300 employees, the company gets from artisanal to industrial.

During early '70s, after a strong devaluation of the dollar and the following market crisis, the company re-invented itself and from being an export firm towards United States, started the development on European market. In the meantime the company becomes supplier for all GoodYear shoes in Italy.

The second generation gets into the company in 1972 with Dino's son, Maurizio Pizzuti, and few years later, his brother Cesare. Thus Zeis Excelsa, encounters a new evolution from industrial company to marketing oriented firm; in 1980 Docksteps brand was born, in 1986 it's time for Sonora and in 1987 Cult.

During early '80s Zeis Excelsa explores an up-till-then unknown ground, licenses: Zeis Excelsa becomes then a leading company, not only for its proprietary brands but also for licensed ones. Starts in 1980 with Champion and in 1985 becomes worldwide license-holder for "Sperry Top Spider", undiscussed inventors and leaders for boat shoes.
In the same year begins the third generation with Marco Pizzuti, Giuseppe's son, who will deal with the creative branch of the company.
Following, in 1988 Zeis becomes licenced distributor for all Harley Davidson footwear and at the dawn of the millennium will get hold of the worldwide license for Dirk Bikkembergs and Bikkembergs brands.

In 2000, Maurizio's son, Francesco, enters the company to deal with the development of the Merrel brand on italian market. From 2004, both Cesare's sons, Dino and Luca, have taken part into the company.
