Calling All Delinquent Dandies: Paul Stuart Debuts Phineas Cole "Fashion is what one wears oneself. What is unfashionable is what other people wear." Rupert Everett as Lord Goring in Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband Paul Stuart, traditional peer of uber-conservative haberdasheries Brooks Brothers and J. Press, just got word that his errant trust-fund nephew’s been kicked out of school – and he’s dragging his delinquent dandy wardrobe home with him. Enter Phineas Cole, fictitious character and namesake of the first line out of Paul Stuart in 70 years, the latest in a growing trend of refined menswear with an anti-establishment twist for the younger set. Perfect for keeping up the most proper of appearances while sneaking a flask of bourbon into opening night at the opera. From straight-laced and buttoned-up uncle Paul Stuart, the Phineas line takes comparably high-quality English and Italian wools, cashmeres and flannels and modernizes the silhouette. A slim, more European profile meets wardrobe minimalism with a touch of whimsy, evidenced by flat-front, darted trousers, adjustable side tabs in lieu of belt loops, and an extra fourth pocket on the inside to conceal your BlackBerry, iPod or as we recommend, flask. Old-school accessories include preppy grosgrain belts, printed suspenders, skinny ties, and pocket squares for the finishing touch. And in the unlikely instance your confidence wavers over the course of the evening, Phineas has thoughtfully embroidered inspirational messages such as “Fortune favors the bold” and “Rebel against forced informality” onto the interior labels and copper linings. All items are produced in very limited editions of 20 to ensure your unique style is not replicated by the average guy on the street. After all, Phineas would quite likely agree with Lord Goring's sentiment above. Before he spikes his coffee at the opera house intermission, that is. Pricing for the season’s tailored collection ranges from $1384 to $2384 for suits, $186 to $295 for shirts, $344 to $424 for odd trousers, $1284 to $1684 for sports jackets, $258 to $897 for sportswear, $697 to $1484 for outerwear and $107 - $170 for neckwear. The Phineas Collection will be housed in boutique settings in both the New York and Chicago Paul Stuart Flagship stores. Get more info at www.phineascole.com
Unruly HeirA new line inspired by Paul Stuart's "errant son"October 3, 2007—Following the success of Hickey Freeman's puckish Hickey offshoot and Thom Browne's boundary-pushing Black Fleece collection for Brooks Brothers, Paul Stuart is unveiling its own younger-skewing second line. Dubbed Phineas Cole, the collection falls somewhere between the Bastian-on-a-budget of Hickey and the fashion-forward (and oddly pint-sized) shopper Browne is targeting with Black Fleece. Suit coats—there are also shirts, trousers, and accessories—are cut shorter and closer to the body, with smartly attenuated waists and shoulders, while trousers cut an equally lean profile: Belt loops are eliminated in favor of adjustable side tabs. ("We don't believe in belt loops for Phineas," says VP and design head Michael Ostrove.) So who exactly is this fictional Phineas? He's "the errant son of Paul Stuart," explains CEO Clifford Grodd, "a cosmopolitan and educated traveler who's a connoisseur of style." We'll have to trust him on the errant part, but given the line's rigorous tailoring and high-end materials (wool and cashmere in several weights are sourced from mills in England and Italy), young Phineas certainly seems to have good taste in clothes. And, apparently, he's also into exclusivity: Each combination of style and fabric will appear in a maximum of 20 numbered suits.Phineas Cole Collection, suits from $1,384, shirts from $186, trousers from $344, sport coats from $1,284, neckwear from $107, outerwear from $697, and sportswear from $258; all available at Paul Stuart NYC, (212) 628-0320, and Chicago, (312) 640-2650, paulstuart.com— Josh Peskowitz
